Wabah virus Corona yang kini sedang terjadi di berbagai belahan dunia tidak hanya mempengaruhi aktivitas di Cina yang ditengarai sebagai negara asalnya. Wabah ini juga berimbas pada sejumlah kegiatan internasional, terutama di industri-industri yang melibatkan relasi lintas negara. Industri game notabene juga memiliki karakteristik seperti itu, sehingga dampaknya pun tak dapat terelakkan.

Pembaca Gimbot mungkin familier dengan acara besar yang disebut Game Developer Conference alias GDC. Acara tersebut sudah lama digelar secara tahunan, dan selain jadi ajang bagi para developer untuk berbagi ilmu, juga kerap digunakan sebagai tempat pameran. Tahun ini GDC direncanakan digelar di San Francisco pada tanggal 16-20 Maret 2020.
Namun sayangnya, dua “pemain” besar industri game yaitu PlayStation dan Facebook telah memutuskan untuk mengundurkan diri dari acara tersebut.
Menurut laporan dari gamesindustry.biz, kedua perusahaan di atas berkata bahwa alasan mereka batal hadir di GDC 2020 adalah karena meningkatnya risiko kesehatan sehubungan dengan COVID-19. Meski cukup disayangkan, Sony Interactive Entertainment lebih memprioritaskan kesehatan dan keamanan karyawan mereka secara global. Sementara itu Facebook, selain tak hadir juga memberikan imbauan pada para karyawan untuk tidak pergi menghadiri konferensi itu.
Khusus untuk Facebook, mereka akan tetap “hadir” di GDC 2020 untuk memberi pengumuman seputar Oculus. Tapi mereka hanya akan hadir secara digital lewat video serta sesi tanya jawab online. Facebook juga akan menggelar pertemuan dengan partner-partner bisnis secara terpisah setelah GDC berakhir.
Perlu diingat bahwa meski sebagian besar kasus COVID-19 terjadi di Cina, penyakit tersebut saat ini sudah menyebar ke negara-negara lainnya termasuk Amerika Serikat. GDC 2020 juga bukan satu-satunya acara yang dibatalkan oleh Sony/PlayStation. Sebelumnya, mereka telah menarik diri dari acara PAX East 2020, padahal rencana awalnya Sony akan memamerkan demo The Last of Us Part II di sana.
Selain GDC 2020, gamesindustry.biz juga melaporkan sejumlah gangguan lain yang terjadi di industri game akibat virus Corona. Misalnya Nintendo yang mengalami keterlambatan produksi Switch, Take-Two Interactive yang harus menunda perilisan The Outer Worlds versi Switch, serta Facebook yang kehabisan stok Oculus Quest karena produksinya terkendala.
Sejumlah kompetisi esports juga telah terimbas oleh wabah Corona dan harus dibatalkan. Salah satunya adalah turnamen PUBG yaitu PGS: Berlin yang seharusnya digelar bulan April namun kini dibatalkan. League of Legends Championship Korea (LCK) Spring Split 2020 juga terpengaruh. Rencananya turnamen ini akan tetap diadakan namun tertutup dari penonton, tapi tak menutup kemungkinan akan ditunda/dibatalkan bila wabah Corona di Korea Selatan semakin parah.
Wabah Corona di luar Cina saat ini jumlahnya memang masih relatif sedikit, tapi WHO telah memberi peringatan bahwa kondisi tersebut bisa berubah sewaktu-waktu. WHO mencatat adanya 1.078 kasus COVID-19 telah terjadi di 26 negara, dan 7 orang di antaranya meninggal dunia. Semoga saja virus Corona cepat ditemukan penangkalnya, dan wabah yang kini sedang terjadi bisa segera mereda.
