Valve boleh saja bangga menjadi perusahaan dengan keuntungan miliaran dolar tiap tahunnya. Tapi untuk urusan keamanan, mungkin sudah waktunya Valve menerapkan standar yang lebih ketat. Kantor mereka rupanya tidak kebal terhadap penyusup dari luar, sebagaimana kasus pencurian yang baru-baru ini dilaporkan oleh Polygon.
Kasus pencurian itu dilakukan oleh seorang pria asal Washington berusia 32 tahun, Shawn Shaputis. Ia berhasil menyusup ke kantor Valve di Bellevue pada tanggal 17 Juni 2018, kemudian mencuri sejumlah barang dan menjualnya. Menurut keterangan dari kepolisian Bellevue, total nilai barang yang dicuri oleh Shaputis mencapai lebih dari US$42.000, atau sekitar Rp593,8 juta.
Shaputis mengaku bahwa ia tidak ingat apa saja barang yang dicurinya, karena ia hanya melemparkan barang-barang random yang temui ke dalam kotak sampah untuk kemudian dibawa kabur. Barang itu mencakup kurang lebih 20 laptop bermerek ASUS, 15 game Xbox One, 23 game PS4, sejumlah Nintendo Switch dan Steam Machine, serta berbagai perangkat promosi dan pernak-pernik game lainnya.
Salah satu benda unik yang ia curi adalah properti “minigun” yang, menurut Shaputis, digunakan oleh Gabe Newell dalam sebuah artikel di majalah Forbes. Dari seluruh barang di atas Shaputis sempat menjual 43 game ke GameStop dengan harga US$336 (sekitar Rp4,75 juta), sementara barang-barang sisanya telah ditemukan oleh polisi.
Bagaimana cara pencuri ini menyusup ke kantor Valve? Kantor Valve di Bellevue terletak di gedung yang disebut Lincoln Square South. Shaputis masuk ke dalam Lincoln Square South lewat sebuah restoran, lalu pergi ke lantai 11 lewat jalur tangga (semacam tangga darurat) yang sedang ditutup.
Kantor Valve di Lincoln Square South terdiri dari 9 lantai, dari lantai 11 hingga 19. Kebetulan kantor lantai 11 itu merupakan bagian kantor yang belum jadi, dan digunakan sebagai tempat penyimpanan barang untuk keperluan pameran atau turnamen. Di sinilah Shaputis kemudian menjalankan tindakan kriminalnya. Sayang, teknik menyusup Shaputis kurang canggih sehingga ia tertangkap oleh kamera ketika tengah beraksi.
Shaputis dilaporkan ke pengadilan King County Superior Court pada tanggal 25 September, dan menjalani persidangan pada tanggal 9 Oktober 2019. Tapi Shaputis sudah punya catatan mangkir dari persidangan sebelumnya. Ia juga tercatat pernah mencuri truk dari FedEx di bulan Juli lalu. Sepertinya dia memang pencuri kambuhan yang tidak kapok-kapok. Jangan ditiru, ya!
